The last ever gig @ The Clapham Grand!

I was very sad and yet delighted to be asked by Indy Award winners FeedMe Music to open the last ever concert at the legendary Clapham Grand on the 8th of October. Despite it playing host to infamous bands such as Oasis and U2 for over 100 years, the new owners of this venue have decided to use it for purposes other than music. (Bite lip).

London Guitar Show

October was asked to play a London Guitar Show for the rather superb Ashdown Amplification alongside the legendry James Lomenzo (Bassist for Zack Wilde and David Lee Roth) and even managed to squeeze in a set on the Acoustic Stage. She walked away from that weekend with fab endorsements from Ashdown and Elixir strings. I personally witnessed her filthy hangover. She won't deny it being anything to do with drinking one too many beers with Dave Gilmore, Phil Hilbourne and the boys from Iron Maiden, I'm sure!!

October – Glastonbury Review

By Guitarist Magazine's Robbie Gladwell

Dance & Fire Stage - Sunday 26th June Glastonbury (main Stages) - prime time 8.55 – 9.30pm

Glastonbury has a reputation and spirit that makes it the festival of the year that every serious professional, and up-and-coming band, would kill to play at. It is the place to be to see the established legends as well as some of those that are destined be legends of the future.

One such new act is a beautiful young female singer/songwriter by the name of ‘October’. Strange as it may seem (although, perhaps not so strange nowadays) it’s her real name. I had heard of October through some friends of mine in the industry and as I was at Glastonbury anyway I thought I’d make my way over to one of the main stages, the ‘Dance And Fire Stage’ to catch her live show. What I saw and heard left me with an overwhelming feeling that I had witnessed a star born!

Within minutes this talented lady had the audience eating out of her hand. Her emotional lyrics and voice left you feeling that her songs could have been written about you personally, she somehow has the rare ability to reach inside and touch feelings that are deeply personal and mostly lay dormant. It was incredible to see one person on her own make people dance and move one moment, and yet cry the next.

Her lyrics are complimented by guitar playing that most male guitarists would be jealous of. She can rock out one moment and then in the next song play such sensitive fingerstyle guitar that you are drawn into her world of passion and intimacy. One such song was ‘Sometimes’, where her playing and touch was breathtaking. Another, ‘No one hurts me like you do’ reminded me of a girlfriend I once had that had a similar sentiment and left me questioning my parentage!

She then went on to play a belter of a song called ‘welcome’. The audience were up on their feet dancing, clapping and sounding their air-horns in appreciation. The chat in between was humorous, slightly self depreciating, yet had the feel of a real artiste feeling her way through a confusing world. In fact, one of her songs was entitled ‘Confuzed’ and describes the feelings of young, unrequited love, in an honest, painful and anguished manner that took me back to my distant youth.

She continued to pull at our heartstrings with a song called ‘This week’, which outlines the pain and joy of day to day life and making friends in new situations.

After this she put her audience on another emotional rollercoaster with ‘Ulterior motives’. Her ability to manipulate words so as to provoke emotions in the listener is excellent.

The only cover song she performed was Damien Rice’s hit ‘Cannonball’, played slightly slower than Damien’s version, with her eyes closed and head tilted, as if she were singing to a lost lover (or perhaps a new one) – a very beautiful, emotive version that had many in the audience close to tears. You could tell she hadn’t a ready devised set list, but went with the flow and played according to the audience and the atmosphere, riding the waves of feeling that she created with her songs and performance.

When she finished her set she stood up and shouted ‘Goodnight Glastonbury’ and then giggled and leaned towards the mic and said ‘I’ve wanted to say that since I started to play guitar’. Then with the audience on their feet, clapping, sounding their air-horns and screaming more, more, she backed away from the mic to make her exit. In an almost surreal, magical, moment she was bathed in the light of a yellow ‘super trooper’ (spotlight) and floated off stage like a golden goddess leaving her new found fans mesmerised! Not missing the significance of the occasion, the press were around, taking photos on and off stage during the performance and after.

I followed her new disciples outside where she was handing out flyers and signing autographs, and after what seemed like an eternity, she left her adoring fans and headed off towards the acoustic tent where she was the first act booked to play at the backstage party along side Billy Bragg.  I jostled through the crowds and managed to catch her up in an attempt to have a quick word with her. She apologised and said that she was lat
